Clinical Characterization of COVID-19 disease

To contribute to the global research efforts into COVID-19, a team based at the University of Yaoundé-I, Cameroon, participating in the ISARIC/ALERRT Clinical Characterisation Protocol (CCP) observational study. This protocol seeks to support a rapid, coordinated clinical investigation of confirmed cases of COVID-19. The team has adapted and modified the protocol to fit the nature and resources of their setting and received ethical approval from their national ethicand administrative review boards. The study was successfully enrolled at their various sites.

What is vital at this time, is to provide SOPs and study materials that can be accessed and used by the team to support high-quality, rapid implementation of these critical COVID-19 studies in the various settings. We acknowledge and know the true power of active sharing and the impact it can have on raising standards and speeding up research.

Therefore, the team in Cameroon has generously provided access to the SOPs and documentation they have developed to support the CCP study at their sites and trained the different stakeholders.

If you desire to share your resources or wish to ask any questions to the team about the Cameroon resources presented below, please get in touch with us at info@theglobalhealthnetwork.org

Primary Objective

The primary objective of this study is to describe the epidemiology, clinical patterns, severity, and management of COVID-19 patients seeking care from non-governmental healthcare facilities.

Secondary objectives:

  1. To determine the extent of infection in non-governmental health facilities

  1. To estimate the outcome (resolved, not resolved, dead) of COVID-19

  1. To determine the risk factors of disease acquisition in the community

  1. To constitute a Biobank for diagnostic tools evaluation and a better understanding of the disease natural history and physiopathology

  1. To follow up the positive cases and: determine the clinical outcome, the risk developing the severe form of the disease and, potential inclusion of these cases in future clinical trials.

  1. To assess community perceptions about COVID-19 and any research efforts related to the disease.

  1. To better understand the perceptions of health care workers on infection prevention and control procedures to prevent Covid-19 transmission.
