Outbreak Research Data Management
Data management encompasses activities around data collection, organisation, maintenance and communication. In this training module, we will focus on the activities related to data management and information communication technologies (ICT), in particular for clinical research.
Background
In clinical research, data can take several forms such as patient records, specimens, observational characteristics, biospecimens, video recordings, images, software programmes, papers, files and many more, reflecting the planned research outputs. ALERRT stands for the African coaLition for Epidemic Research, Response and Training. It is a network of European and African organizations which aims to reduce the public health and socio-economic impacts of disease outbreaks in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It does so by building a clinical and laboratory network in preparation for and response to outbreaks in SSA.
In this training module, we will focus on the activities related to data management and information communication technologies (ICT), in particular on the design of a data management plan and its reference to relevant data management and ICT procedures led by ALERRT WP 3 collaborators. This provides an overview of setup and data management in low- and middle-income countries where ALERRT study sites are distributed.
A Data Management Plan (DMP) plays a central role in making explicit to all stakeholders, specific information regarding the data management practices for a project or study. It provides information on what and how data will be collected, processed, retained, and shared, on the roles and responsibilities of those involved, on deliverables and timelines and on the measures to ensure data integrity, quality, confidentiality and security.
How to navigate the materials
You can follow the modules sequentially or select your specific areas of interest, the videos will guide you throughout the course. Links in the diagram below will direct you to the contents where the PowerPoint presentations and SOPs/GOPs are available to download.
Learning Objectives
- Know the Work Packages (WPs) that make up the ALERRT consortium
- Gain deeper insight into the making of a Data Management Plan, its reference to pre-study, study conduct and post-study procedures, in particular to data management and ICT.
It should be noted that IT and ICT were used interchangeably, not to make a distinction, but with the intention of explaining the role of technology in supporting the management of data.
