As part of the response to the emergence of the COVID-19 disease, the Regional Office for Africa of the World Health Organization (WHO/AFRO) is organizing various training activities in infection, prevention and control (IPC) and intensive care targeting low- and middle-income countries in Africa.
While the initiatives taken by WHO/AFRO are essential, training in disease research must also be targeted to these same low- and middle-income countries. This is an emerging infectious disease and we must learn as we go.
Clinical research on COVID-19 should be closely integrated with IPC training activities, clinical care and epidemiology, including the use of the First Case X (FFX) and contact tracing protocol. WHO for COVID-19. We propose to work closely with WHO/AFRO, the African CDC and existing networks and structures in Africa and around the world to provide this training and support for clinical research.
ALERRT is a member of the ISARIC network, which has developed a clinical characterization protocol for COVID-19. This protocol has been approved by the WHO and is currently used in China and Europe. The ALERRT network is already established and carrying out activities in sub-Saharan Africa, therefore it has the capacity to effectively implement the proposed project.
To access all COVID-19 clinical research resources and guidance to support this CCP observational study at your site, please visit the ISARIC hub here. In addition to these resources, a series of short video tutorials are available here to support the implementation of the CCP study by research teams globally.
